Overview
Viscoelastic testing (VET) can be an essential part of a hospital’s patient blood management (PBM) program.
This webinar will discuss the University of Utah’s experience with the implementation and growth of VET and
the clinical and economic benefits for their patients and the institution.

Speaker:
Nathaniel M. Birgenheier, MD
Associate Professor, Anesthesiology, University of Utah

Dr. Birgenheier is a board-certified anesthesiologist focused on cardiac anesthesia and the use of echocardiography, both in the operating room and the outpatient setting. He has advanced training in patient care for cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. Dr. Birgenheier’s clinical areas of interest include point-of-care coagulation monitoring, perioperative hemostasis, PBM, and perioperative echocardiography. He completed medical school at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, and his anesthesia residency and fellowship at the University of Utah.


Objectives
• Provide an overview of VET and rotational thromboelastometry
• Outline the University of Utah’s PBM process and use of VET
• Describe the economic benefits the University of Utah realized when implementing VET as part of their evidence based PBM program
