• Describe the basics of ECMO and articulate differences in cardiovascular and pulmonary support
• Outline two landmark studies that led to increased ECMO usage in adults
• Discuss therapeutic management and drug sequestration during ECMO
• Identify standard laboratory tests for patients undergoing ECMO and understand their significance speakers

Brandon Burk, MS, RRT-ACCS
Brandon is the Director of Clinical Education, Respiratory Program, at Ozarks Technical Community
College in Springfield, MO. He is a registered respiratory therapist and adult critical care specialist. He
also holds a Master of Science in respiratory care leadership from Northeastern University. As an ECMO
educator, Brandon was part of the team that implemented the adult ECMO program at Mercy Hospital in
Kansas City, MO. His research interests include mechanical ventilation, arterial blood gas interpretation
and oxygen delivery.


Doug Kirk, BS, RRT-ACCS
Doug is the ECMO Coordinator for UF Health in Jacksonville, Florida. He has more than a decade of
experience managing cardiovascular services, ECMO coordination, and respiratory care and education.
Doug has served on the advisory board of the Respiratory Care Program at Missouri Southern State
University, and is an active contributor to the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC) and the
National Board for Respiratory Care.
