Overview
Job Summary
The Global Product Sustainability Customer Specialist will lead the development and delivery of customer-facing sustainability information, supporting requests from customers, distributors, healthcare systems, and public procurement organizations worldwide.
The role serves as the primary bridge between Sustainability, Commercial, Marketing, and Product teams, translating complex sustainability topics into clear customer responses, compelling presentations, credible value propositions, and consistent market-facing communications.
Working closely with global and regional commercial teams, Product Management, Marketing, QA/RA, Supply Chain, Procurement, Packaging Engineering, and Corporate Sustainability, this position will strengthen Werfen’s ability to respond to sales tenders, customer sustainability requests, supplier assessments, and emerging healthcare procurement expectations.
The ideal candidate combines sustainability and product stewardship expertise with strong capabilities in customer engagement, commercial communications, data interpretation, stakeholder collaboration, and the development of customer-ready materials.
This position reports to the Global Product Sustainability Sr. Manager under the corporate sustainability leadership.
Responsibilities
Key Accountabilities
Customer & Commercial Support
- Support Werfen commercial and affiliates teams with sustainability-related tenders, customer questionnaires, audits, and supplier assessments.
- Partner to develop a centralized process for sustainability information requests from Werfen teams.
- Establish and maintain a centralized repository for critical data, knowledge, and best practices, enabling efficient information sharing and eliminating redundant effort across teams.
- Partner with commercial teams across North America, Europe, APAC, LATAM, China, and EEMEA to address customer sustainability requirements.
Sustainability Data & Insights
- Develop sustainability datasets, metrics, and supporting documentation needed for customer responses.
- Collect, organize, and maintain sustainability information from internal stakeholders.
- Conduct benchmarking and competitive intelligence on sustainability programs, ratings, certifications, and customer expectations.
- Translate technical sustainability information into clear customer benefits and business insights.
Sustainability SME & Product Design Advisory
- Serve as a subject matter expert on sustainability topics relevant to products, packaging, procurement, and customer requirements.
- Advise and partner with Product Management, R&D, Packaging Engineering, QA/RA, and Commercial teams to incorporate sustainability considerations into product design criteria and lifecycle decisions.
- Assess when product-level sustainability certifications, claims substantiation, lifecycle assessments, carbon footprint studies, or other third-party assessments may be needed to support customer, regulatory, or market expectations.
- Provide clear guidance on sustainability trade-offs, data gaps, evidence requirements, and customer-facing positioning for new and existing products.
Sustainability Communications & Marketing
- Create customer-ready presentations, factsheets, brochures, infographics, and sustainability sales tools.
- Support development of sustainability value propositions and customer-facing messaging.
- Partner with Marketing and Communications teams to ensure consistent sustainability storytelling.
- Help communicate Werfen's sustainability achievements in a credible and compliant manner.
Strategy & Collaboration
- Monitor sustainability trends, healthcare procurement requirements, and competitor activities.
- Support the development of sustainability knowledge repositories and customer response processes.
- Collaborate with Sales, Marketing, Product Management, Supply Chain, Regulatory Affairs, Quality, and Corporate Sustainability teams.

Qualifications
Minimum Knowledge & Experience Required for the Position
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Engineering, Business, Marketing, Communications, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in sustainability, ESG, product sustainability, commercial excellence, consulting, marketing, or related fields.
- Strong presentation development and communication skills.
- Experience working across functions and influencing stakeholders.
- Ability to simplify complex technical topics for non-technical audiences.
Experience: Minimum 8-10 years of experience in supporting customer sustainability requests, procurement processes, supplier questionnaires, or sales tenders. Experience creating customer-facing presentations, marketing materials, and executive communications.
Preferred:
- Experience within the medical device (MD), in vitro diagnostics (IVD), life sciences, laboratory diagnostics, healthcare, or biopharmaceutical industries strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of healthcare sustainability trends, sustainable procurement requirements, and customer expectations within healthcare systems, laboratories, hospitals, and public sector procurement organizations.
- Familiarity with sustainability topics such as carbon footprinting, circular economy, sustainable packaging, lifecycle thinking, sustainable procurement, ESG reporting, and sustainability ratings (e.g., EcoVadis, CDP, SBTi).
- Experience working in a global, matrixed organization supporting multiple regions and stakeholders.
- Knowledge of medical device and IVD regulatory environments and the intersection between sustainability, product stewardship, compliance, and commercial strategy is a plus.

- Strong understanding of sustainability, ESG, product sustainability, and product stewardship topics relevant to healthcare, diagnostics, and customer procurement requirements.
- Ability to translate complex technical, regulatory, and sustainability information into clear, customer-ready responses, presentations, and value propositions.
- Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills, with the ability to develop executive-level materials, tender responses, FAQs, factsheets, and sales enablement tools.
- Strong analytical and data interpretation skills, with the ability to organize sustainability information, identify insights, and maintain accurate customer-facing evidence.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate across Sustainability, Commercial, Marketing, Product Management, QA/RA, Supply Chain, Procurement, and regional sales teams in a global matrix environment.
- Customer-focused, proactive, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple requests, deadlines, and stakeholder priorities with credibility and professionalism.
