Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) belongs to the transforming growth factor β family of growth and differentiation factors. AMH is a dimeric glycoprotein that is secreted as a 140 kDa homodimer glycoprotein precursor consisting of two 70 kDa monomers1. AMH is expressed in the Sertoli cells in the testis in males from the fetal stage to adulthood. In females, AMH expression is in the granulosa cells of the postnatal ovary1.
In clinical laboratories, the measurement of circulating levels of AMH is used for the assessment of the functional ovarian reserve. The functional ovarian reserve constitutes the pool of follicles with a diameter from 2 to 5 mm. From those follicles one would be selected by the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) to proceed with ovulation. This group of growing ovarian follicles produce AMH and thus serum AMH levels correlate with the functional ovarian reserve2.
AMH levels in serum vary depending on woman's age, from birth the levels of serum AMH increase until approximately 25 years when the levels reach a plateau. From the age of 25 years, AMH levels gradually decline until they become undetectable at menopause2.
