Tools to gain understanding of immunoassays II

De-risk your immunoassay development project

November 7, 2025

A greater knowledge about the immunoassay reduces the risk in the immunoassay development.

A successful immunoassay development project relies on a thorough understanding of each assay component and their interactions. This deep expertise enables teams to make informed decisions early on, efficiently directing R&D resources toward effective solutions.

By proactively addressing potential challenges at the outset, development risks are minimized before the project reaches costly and complex later stages. Early optimization not only streamlines the workflow but also safeguards against unexpected setbacks.

At Werfen, we rely on our experience in immunoassay development to de-risk your new immunoassay development project.

Our Approach

The development of reliable and sensitive immunoassays requires a comprehensive understanding of the raw materials that drive assay performance and adaptability. Selecting the right raw materials during immunoassay development is fundamental for having products that consistently meet the required performance and robustness requirements.

With more than 50 years of experience in immunoassay development, Werfen has continually advanced solutions in latex-based immunoassays, and chemiluminescence immunoassays (CLIA).

For latex-based immunoassays, enhancers play a crucial role in assay optimization. The inherent variability of raw latex materials can impact the reproducibility and analytical sensitivity of assays. Incorporating enhancers serves two strategic purposes:

  • Compensating for raw material variability

  • Compensating for immunoassay scale-up potential variability

  • Optimizing assay performance

In CLIA, magnetic microparticles are a cornerstone of assay design. However, there is a growing recognition of the environmental impact associated with traditionally used carboxylated magnetic particles, many of which are polystyrene-based.

In response to environmental challenges and evolving regulatory expectations, a new generation of microplastics-free, carboxylated magnetic particles has been developed for CLIA applications. These innovative beads maintain the assay performance standards while significantly reducing the environmental footprint compared to traditional polystyrene-based materials.

Outcomes

At Werfen, our enduring commitment to innovation drives us to continuously evaluate and refine the raw materials that form the foundation of immunoassay technologies. Our recent assessments of new enhancers and eco-friendly magnetic particles have yielded promising results. With further research and development, these advancements have the potential to become powerful tools that enhance the performance and sustainability of immunoassays.
