Chagas disease, caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, represents a major neglected tropical disease primarily affecting Latin America, with over 7 million people infected worldwide. WHO estimates over 10,000 annual deaths, with 100 million at risk in 21 Latin American countries[1].
Trypanosoma cruzi infects humans mainly through the feces of triatomine bugs in endemic rural areas, though transmission also occurs congenitally, via contaminated food, blood transfusions, or organ transplants. The acute phase often presents mild, nonspecific symptoms like fever and swelling, progressing silently to damage the nervous system and muscles of the heart and digestive system if left untreated[2].
Serological tests form the cornerstone of diagnosing chronic Chagas disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, primarily through detection of persistent IgG antibodies. PAHO and WHO guidelines recommend using at least two independent serological assays based on different principles or antigens[3]
Chagas disease, affecting over 7 million people globally with rising cases in non-endemic areas, is fuelling increased demand for serological immunoassays. Are you ready for that?
